This innovative program, designed by our team at Another set of eyes, utilises state-of-the-art virtual reality technology to transform the way driving skills are taught and refined within the council. Antrim and Newtownabbey, known for their scenic beauty and vibrant communities, now lead the way in adopting advanced training technologies to ensure safer roads. The borough, encompassing both historic and rapidly developing areas, presents a unique set of challenges and responsibilities for drivers navigating its diverse environments.

The newly launched VR driver training program is tailored specifically to meet the needs of the borough’s drivers. By integrating 360-degree video technology, this program offers an immersive experience that dramatically enhances situational awareness and decision-making abilities. Drivers can now engage in realistic driving simulations that replicate a wide range of scenarios they might encounter on the roads of Antrim and Newtownabbey.

The development and success of this program were made possible through the collaborative efforts of Kim Morrow and WilliamHunter from Antrim and Newtownabbey, along with our partner James Tillyer who played an important role in developing the course content. We would also like to extend a special thanks to Laurel View Equestrian Centre for their invaluable assistance in recording horse rider-related footage, which has greatly enriched the training modules.

The virtual reality component of our training program is enhanced by the integration of eye-tracking technology, allowing drivers to experience and react to complex driving situations in a safe, controlled environment. This innovative combination goes beyond merely learning the rules of the road; it immerses drivers in real-time scenarios, crucial for effective learning and retention of practical driving skills.

By tracking and analysing eye movements, we gain valuable insights into driver attention and behaviour, enabling us to tailor feedback and training to improve focus and situational awareness. The program is designed to significantly reduce the number of accidents by equipping drivers with the knowledge and reflexes needed to handle potential road incidents more confidently and competently.

This project stands as a testament to the commitment of the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council to embrace innovative solutions that enhance the safety and efficiency of its services. The council’s proactive approach in partnering with anet360 for this VR training initiative underscores their dedication to improving public safety and community well-being.
